Fleming College is deeply committed to creating an equitable, diverse, inclusive college where everyone belongs.
As a college, we acknowledge the patterns of historical exclusion and the legacies it has produced. Our mandate is to challenge societal inequality by addressing systemic discrimination within our institution by examining and redesigning the infrastructure, policies, and practices that have left many behind. Through research, behaviour change, modifications of social standards, systemic disruption, policy change, education and training to achieve a cultural climate of inclusion and belonging.
“Fleming College is committed to being a welcoming place for all, where the needs of our diverse populations are met, and varying perspectives enrich our communities. It is our shared responsibility to understand the experiences of our employees and students in culturally safe and inclusive ways. Together, guided by our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Council, Fleming will continue to follow our strategic direction and meet our commitment to eliminate barriers and build an inclusive sense of belonging”. Maureen Adamson, President
To achieve our mandate and fulfill our commitment, we are redeveloping our vision of the community we need and want for students, employees, faculty and staff.
Over the next few months, we will work with the Fleming community to design a shared vision for the future of Fleming. To be involved or receive updates on the initiatives, please email edicouncil@flemingcollege.ca.
In 2021, Fleming College responded to an identified gap in addressing equity, diversity and inclusion by collectively developing its first institution-wide Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Council. The council comprised individuals from across the college who wanted to advance equity. Significant strides were made, wherein the college, through the council’s work, produced its first report on demographics and a strategic action plan addressing inequity on campus.
We aim to foster a culture of belonging, inclusion and psychological safety. Members will prioritize the identification of issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion that impact equity-seeking members and work to address issues through Fleming College’s Action Plan Addressing EDI.
To connect to the EDI Alliance, please send an email to edicouncil@flemingcollege.ca.
In accordance with the Ontario Government’s Bill 166, Fleming College has updated its Harassment and Discrimination policy to include incidents of racism and hate that occur on campus.
All Fleming Community members deserve to access a campus that is free from racism, hate, harassment and/or discrimination. This policy aims to prevent experiences through education and address incidents through the implementation of the Harassment and Discrimination policy.
Starting in 2026, Fleming will report on the occurrences of racism and hate on campus each year and provide the College Community with updates on the impact of initiatives. The College will review the policy every five years to ensure alignment with promising practices.
