Indigenous Fleming

Acknowledging the Territory

Fleming College respectfully acknowledges that we are situated on Mississauga lands and the traditional territory covered by the Williams Treaties.

We are grateful for the opportunity to work and teach here and we thank all the generations of people who have taken care of this land - for thousands of years. We recognize and deeply appreciate their historic connection to this place. We also recognize the contributions of Métis, Inuit, and other Indigenous peoples, both in shaping and strengthening this community and country as a whole. This recognition is connected to our collective commitment to make the promise and the challenge of Truth and Reconciliation real in our Fleming community.

One step was the signing of the Colleges and Institutes Canada's (CICan) Indigenous Education Protocol (IEP) which symbolizes our commitment to fortifying relationships with Indigenous communities while embedding intellectual and cultural traditions, as understood by Indigenous peoples, into our curriculum, and activities.

Indigenous Education Council

Commitment to Indigenous Peoples

Fleming’s Indigenous Education Council develops and supports Indigenous education aspirations through curriculum, programs, services and research.

Supporting Student Success

We recognize that First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities are unique. By creating a community of all Indigenous peoples on campus, we can encourage one another through the sometimes-challenging experience of attending college.

Fleming offers a range of programs and services to help students succeed through connection to community, culture and self-care. We strive to support our students’ mental, physical, spiritual and emotional health as they follow their individual learning paths

Bishkaa

Anishnaabemowin for “rise up”, Bishkaa is an orientation and mentorship program that supports first-year Indigenous students in their transition to Fleming.

Cultural Programming

Throughout the academic year, the Indigenous Student Services team provides cultural supports and programming, including Elder visits, traditional knowledge teachings, and connections to community events and resources.

Indigenous Perspectives Designation

Unique in Ontario, the Indigenous Perspectives Designation (IPD) provides students with discipline-specific Indigenous knowledge of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples including their cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions to our shared society with all courses taught by Indigenous faculty.

Financial Assistance

We can assist with applying for the many bursaries and scholarships available to Indigenous students.

Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

Fleming is committed to Truth and Reconciliation through reflecting on our past, owning our truth, and inclusion of Indigenous intellectual and cultural traditions in our curriculum and learning approaches.
