Alumna of Distinction – Nursing ’87 Grad
Fleming College is pleased to announce that Nursing ’87 graduate Michelle Acorn is the recipient of the 2013 Alumna of Distinction Award. This prestigious award is given to an alumnus who attains outstanding career success and professional achievement.
Michelle is a Lead Nurse Practitioner and Professional Practice Leader at Lakeridge Health in Whitby, Ontario. She is recognized by Fleming College as an outstanding Nurse Practitioner (NP) who not only demonstrates leadership and expertise in her field but provides patients, families and inter-professional teams with excellent, informative and compassionate care.
As a proven leader and innovator in the nursing field, Michelle has gained utmost respect in a myriad of professional organizations. She spearheaded the Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario’s (NPAO) Project SCOPE (Supporting Competencies and Optimizing Practice Excellence) and she was co-lead in the publishing of the Provincial NP Utilization in Hospital Toolkit for implementation and sustainability.
Her cross-appointments at the University of Toronto and University of Ontario Institute of Technology reflect the active involvement she has as a professor in teaching, research and development of academic programs. Concurrently, Michelle has held key positions such as Chair of Ontario Hospital Association NP Conference and President of the NPAO, a Board she was on for seven years.
As the President of NPAO, Michelle left her legacy with the proclamation of Bill 179 and Regulation 965 of the Public Hospital Act to truly enable a full scope of practice for NPs to optimize health care access and services.
Michelle is the recipient of many career-related awards including the NPAO Gerry Gerow Leadership Award, the Advocacy and Commitment Award, and Lakeridge Health Service Excellence Award. She is a Colleges Ontario 2012 Premier’s Award – Health Sciences nominee.
Dr. Tony Tilly, President of Fleming College, will present the Alumna of Distinction Award to Michelle at the college’s School of Community Development and Health convocation ceremony on Thursday, June 13 at 10 a.m. in Peterborough.
