Guest speaker Spider Jones to share his message at Sutherland Campus on February 19
Peterborough ON – (February 10, 2015) – Fleming College is celebrating Black History Month with special events and displays at the Sutherland Campus organized by Fleming Student Administrative Council (SAC), the Sutherland Library and the Diversity Office.

Fleming SAC’s guest speaking series Fleming Talks continues this month in the Library with special guest Kemi Akapo. All are welcome to attend as Kemi talks about her experience as an African Canadian who came to Canada as an international student, and about strategies for integrating newcomers in the community.

Listen to award-winning journalist, professional boxer, motivational speaker and youth worker Spider Jones, who will inspire the audience with his “Believe to Achieve” message. His life story reveals his amazing rise from the impoverished, gang-infested, inner-city projects of Detroit and Windsor and how, as a Grade 5 dropout, he eventually returned to school at the age of thirty to become an honour student.
Spider acted as a sparring partner for such boxing legends as George Chuvalo and former World Heavyweight Champion Jimmy Ellis. Spider was also a member of Muhammad Ali’s training camp back in the days when ‘The Greatest’ fought Chuvalo.

Students and staff are invited to drop by the SAC booth in the main foyer to add messages and artwork to the “Stand Up Against Racism” banner. Also, students and staff can visit the Black History Month book display in the Library and check out some great readings.
