Fleming College

A group of local high school students had the opportunity to try out careers in the forestry industry at Frost Campus on Thursday, September 27, as part of National Forestry Week celebrations at Fleming College. The students, from the Lindsay area, visited three skill stations:   Forest Renewal – students took part in planting trees and spoke with forest technicians on how successful planting is carried out   Forest Fire Fighting – students tried out the special equipment used to fight forest fires and heard from two alumni currently working in the forest fire fighting industry in northern Ontario and Alberta  Urban Forestry – students learned about the necessity for urban forestry management and how to make knots used in climbing in the arboriculture/urban forestry industries  Fleming College’s cluster of forestry programs – Arboriculture, Forestry and Urban Forestry – educates and trains students in forest resource management as well as in identifying, maintaining and preserving trees and shrubs. Students in these programs learn to use forestry technology and equipment and spend most of their class time outdoors gaining hands-on experience in the field. This year’s theme for National Forestry Week was Canada’s Forests: Tradition and Transition. The week challenges all Canadians to learn more about their forest heritage and support greater recognition of this valuable resource.
