Community Innovation Forum: Knowledge and Talent in Action Showcase
Encouraging community development through innovation, collaboration and entrepreneurship is the foundation of the Community Innovation Forum – Knowledge and Talent in Action Showcase (CIF: KTIAS) held today at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club.
The CIF: KTIAS showcases the applied projects of Fleming and Trent students. It is hosted by Fleming College, Trent University, the Trent Centre for Community Based Education, and the Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster.
Students in Fleming’s Business and Technology programs have been working with real world clients for the entire winter semester on a variety of projects. These include:
– Online Prisoner Database: create an online prisoner database for joint use by Peterborough-Lakefield Community Police and court house staff;
– Automated Greenhouse: incorporate sensors to monitor and control the growing environment in a greenhouse;
– Social Media and Communications Plan: working with the Norwood Fair Organizing Committee, students have created a centralized database for contacts and media, and have constructed an integrated social media plan.
– Export Guide for Small Business: Students, working with Brain Child Consulting (a company started and owned by Fleming alumni Charlie Dickenson), have created a guide to exporting for small businesses.
These projects provide valuable hands-on experience for the students, helping to ensure they are ready to enter the workforce and succeed in their field. The projects are judged and awards will be handed out at a ceremony later in the day.
The CIF: KTIAS also includes:
– A panel discussion, Breaking Down Barriers to Thrive in Peterborough, featuring local business owner Mike Watt (Plush, Flavour Fashion and Save our Soles), Reboot Peterborough and COIN Manager Lars Verholt and Siemens Senior Communications Specialist Carla Guest.
– A Fireside Keynote Chat with Fleming College President Tony Tilly, Trent University President Steven Franklin, and Stephen Huddart, President and CEO of the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation is also part of the event.
– Creative Cocktail: announcement of the Bear’s Lair finalists.
