Published

Fleming College‘s success at the 2011 Ontario Skills Competition was highlighted with the gold medal won by Andrew Tye in the Culinary Arts category and the bronze medal of Stephanie Dekoning in the Restaurant Service category.

Andrew, Stephanie, and all of the students representing the college at the annual event, held May 2-3 in Waterloo, were rewarded for their hard work and dedication. They represented themselves and Fleming College with a high standard of excellence.

Team Fleming 2011 consisted of Robynne Hubert and Brett Van Allen in the Baking competition; Andrew Tye and David Li in the Culinary Arts competition; Stephanie Dekoning, Jessica Voigt and Jamie Smith in the Restaurant Service competition.

Andrew will now have the opportunity to represent Ontario at the Skills Canada National Competition, June 1-4, in Quebec City.

“Some days were long and tiring, but it was well worth it. By the end I thought the skills I developed during my education and training were showcased in the plates I presented to the judges,” said Andrew.

“The event itself was a real eye opener; it was great to witness the quality and diversity of trades within Ontario. Thank you to Jim Drennan , Dean of the School of Business, Computing and Hospitality, for the support, and thank you to Bev Murby and Patricia Thompson, from King Cole Duck, for sponsoring the award.  I am already working on the national scope to proudly represent Ontario and Fleming College. Thank you to all the staff and students for their encouragement.”

Stephanie Dekonning stated: “It was an amazing experience to see all the skills and students performing. It was a great challenge for myself, and I can only look forward to the opportunities it will bring me in the future. I highly recommend it to any potential students. I am grateful to have the chance to participate in such an event; I could not have done it without the help and support of my peers and mentors.”

“Congratulations to the entire Fleming team at the 2011 Skills Competition. Special congratulations to Andrew with his gold medal at the Culinary Arts competition and to Stephanie with the bronze medal at the Restaurant Service competition. Your efforts make us all proud,” said Wayne Bonner, Academic Lead, School of Business, Computing and Hospitality.

In the last four years at the Ontario Skills Competition, Fleming culinary students have won four gold medals as well as several silver and bronze medals. Andrew Tye, who won gold this year, is the son of recently retired Fleming faculty member Al Tye.
