Diversity Events return to Sutherland Campus

Published

The Global Cafe returns to the Steele Centre at Fleming College’s Sutherland Campus in Peterborough on Thursday, October 18. The cafe is a joint activity of the Diversity Office and the Student Administrative Council (SAC),and creates a relaxed environment for discussing a range of interesting topics, while letting students raise funds for projects by selling coffee. This month the theme brings together two well-known annual Peterborough events, Week Without Violence and Aboriginal Awareness Day. Fleming College is situated close to three important First Nations communities: Curve Lake, Hiawatha and Alderville First Nations. North of Peterborough near Ardoch, two other communities are currently in a land claim conflict with both the Canadian government and a company wishing to exploit the disputed land for uranium mining. Join us at noon on October 18 in the lower Steele Centre as we discuss the issue with Algonquin community leaders. The cafe will also be selling espresso, cappuccino and cookies, with proceeds going towards the SAC and student club development on campus. Aboriginal community groups will also host displays. Week Without Violence events include an open forum: “The Face of Oppression: Envisioning a World Without Violence”.  Students of the Social Service Worker program invite you to join them October 18 at 4 p.m. for a presentation in room 374 by three local leaders in anti-oppression work: Audrey Caskanette will speak about violence against Aboriginal women; Owen McEwen of Peterborough AIDS Resource Network discusses the risks of coming out of the closet for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth; and Mike Ma of the Community and Race Relations Committee will address racism in Peterborough. All are welcome to attend these events. The schedule is: October 15 to 17  Week Without Violence displays in the lower foyer outside room 374   October 18 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – Global Cafe and displays open in Steele Centre Noon to 1 p.m. – Global Café Aboriginal Awareness Day discussion  4 to 6 p.m. – Anti-oppression forum in room 374For more information, contact Diversity Coordinator Debbie Harrison at 705-749-5520 ext. 1179 or debharri@flemingc.on.ca.
