Ecosystem Management students in Costa Rica

Published

A group of fourth semester Fleming College Ecosystem Management Technician students are currently in Costa Rica for a field placement (April 20 to May 4). The students are participating in a community-based marine turtle monitoring and conservation program in Parismina.

The goal of the conservation program is to protect marine turtles from poachers, educate local citizens about conservation and generate an income for participants from the village.

The field placement also includes snake ecology, plant and tree phenology, bird monitoring, and neotropical rain forest ecology. Students will be collecting meterological data, conducting station maintenance, cooking, and participating in and assisting with  marine turtle research and community engagement. The trip also includes team activities and group excursions into the rain forest.

Faculty member Josh Feltham is leading the field placement. Follow their adventures through their blog, written by students Jacob Knight and Kate Powell.
