Published

Lindsay ON – July 30, 2010 – Fleming College’s Environmental Technician program joins three post-secondary institutions in Ontario to be accredited by the Canadian Environmental Accreditation Commission (CEAC).

“Accreditation will signify to prospective students, graduates and employers that Fleming College’s Environmental Technician program has met national standards against specific criteria with regard to curriculum, learning resources, and faculty credentials and experience,” said Linda Skilton, Dean of the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences at Fleming College’s Frost Campus.

The CEAC is a standing committee of Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) Canada to provide non-governmental, third party, auditing for universities, colleges and other technical institutes.

“ECO Canada has worked closely with the Canadian post-secondary community for a number of years in developing this program. It is very exciting to see the results of this collaboration and to witness leading institutions such as Fleming College being recognized for their commitment to world-class environmental education. ECO Canada accreditation sends a clear signal to industry that graduates of these programs have the desired knowledge and competence to meet the growing needs of the environmental sector,” said Michael Kerford, Vice President, ECO Canada.

This newest accreditation illustrates Fleming’s continued dedication to ensure students will receive education tested against the highest standards to equip them with all that is necessary to succeed after graduation.

Graduates of the Environmental Technician program have gone on to become groundwater technicians, watershed technicians, water quality technicians and environmental technicians, soil specialists and environmental officers.

Fleming applied to be considered for the accreditation in October 2009, as part of a national pilot project. Fleming is one of six post-secondary institutions in Canada, and one of three colleges chosen for the pilot accreditation process.
