Slap shot your way to the Polar Cup event and enjoy a weekend of fun-filled 4-on-4 hockey games.The Ontario Speed Skating Oval (OSSO) is hosting Polar Cup 2009, an annual event that will take place on January 30 – February 1, 2009 at the OSSO’s future site, beside Lakefield District Secondary School in the Village of Lakefield. Polar Cup will be held in conjunction with Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield Township’s Polarfest, an annual community winter carnival.The money raised from the Polar Cup event will go toward the goal of building one of only three long track speed skating facilities in Canada.A team of students in Fleming College’s Event Management program are helping to coordinate the first annual Polar Cup.As part of the curriculum, the Event Management program takes on community clients. Students – working in teams – plan, coordinate and deliver the clients’ events. This provides valuable real life experience for the students and the opportunity to deliver live events. A team of three students – Kaila Arcand, Rebecca Dutkewich, and Moniek Oudshoorn – are working with the OSSO to coordinate Polar Cup 2009. They will provide support with planning, recruiting players, and executing the event. Teams in the event will be competing for the prestigious Polar Cup Championship title. Designed for business, marketing, tourism, hotel management or arts graduates, this dynamic program provides the training and experience to enter the growing live events industry on a global level.
