Fleming College and Trent University partner to offer new pathways between institutions
New agreements provide pathways between Fleming’s Earth Resources Technician program and Trent’s Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geoscience.
City of Kawartha Lakes, ON – (March 30, 2017) – Fleming College’s Earth Resources Technician (ERT) Co-op program and Trent University’s new Environmental Geoscience B.Sc. degree have partnered to offer new pathways between the programs.
“We are excited about these new agreements that mutually benefit both Trent and Fleming graduates. They build on the partnership memorandum of understanding signed by the Trent School of the Environment and Fleming’s School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences in April 2016,” said Linda Skilton, Dean, School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences at Fleming College.
“Trent and Fleming have developed a range of collaborative efforts in programming and research in the past where students have had the opportunity to connect theory and principles with hands-on practical application. This new pathway is no different,” said Dr. Jackie Muldoon, Provost and Vice-President Academic at Trent University. “This agreement will offer students an excellent opportunity to broaden the scope of their degree and experience numerous hands-on learning experiences in advance of their future career.”
Trent and Fleming recently signed two articulation agreements that provide qualified graduates advanced standing in each program.
Eligible graduates of Fleming’s five-semester ERT diploma program can enter the third year of Trent’s Honours B.Sc. Environmental Geoscience degree program. Graduates of Fleming will be granted nine credits toward the 20 required to graduate.
Likewise, graduates of the Environmental Geoscience program at Trent, which was recently approved by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development, can enter the fourth semester of ERT. Within this pathway, students would need to complete semesters four and five as well as a 645-hour co-op to receive their diploma.
“Graduates from the Earth Resources Technician program at Fleming’s Frost Campus will have the opportunity to complete a degree in as few as two years. Further, this pathway includes the courses necessary for graduates to pursue their Professional Geoscientist designation,” said Skilton. “The second agreement provides a pathway for Trent graduates to enter the Earth Resources program and complete their course requirements in 21 weeks. The final requirement to complete the Technician diploma is a paid co-op work term.”
Fleming College’s Earth Resources Technician Co-op program is the only college program that offers a blend of geology, mineral exploration, environmental, and engineering techniques in one program. This unique mix of integrated courses provides a well-rounded and comprehensive skill set. The ERT program will further benefit from updated lab and study spaces as part of a major renovation at Frost Campus that will be completed in April 2018. As well, as part of the program, students take part in a six-month paid co-op work term in an applied geology role. Graduates of ERT have one of the highest post-graduation employment rates in their field of study of any Fleming programs.
Trent University’s new innovative B.Sc. degree in Environmental Geoscience within the Trent School of the Environment, slated to welcome its first class of students in September 2017, will allow students to work toward the professional geoscientist licensing requirements while exploring the interaction between human activity and earth systems. The new program integrates the disciplines of Geology, Biology, Chemistry and Geography. Graduates, and those with the P. Geo. Designation, will be prepared for success in a variety of careers in the public and private sectors as environmental geoscientists, geochemists, geologists and geomorphologists, just to name a few.
