Fleming College and Trent University support provincial government effort to raise awareness against sexual violence and harassment on campus
Peterborough ON – (March 19, 2019) – Fleming College and Trent University welcome the recently released results from the 2018 Student Voices on Sexual Violence Survey. The survey results are an opportunity to raise awareness around sexual violence on campuses and within the community.
“Fleming supports the release of the survey as it is imperative that we work in partnership with Trent University and our other postsecondary institutions to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect our students,” said Maureen Adamson, Fleming College President. “One incident of violence on our campus is one too many. We take seriously our commitment to support those who experience sexual violence, and work diligently on campus and with community partners on programs, policies and resources to ensure that our campus is a safe space for everyone in our college community.”
“We wish to thank all students who responded to the survey. We stand with the government and our partners in taking the issue of sexual violence very seriously. Any incident is unacceptable,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor at Trent University. “We will be carefully reviewing the survey results and making continuous improvements to change attitudes, provide supports for survivors, and make Trent’s campuses safe to help stop sexual violence and harassment.”
As postsecondary institutions that prioritize the safety and wellbeing of our students, Trent and Fleming continually work on sexual violence prevention training, and support for those who have experienced sexual harassment, stalking or sexual violence. Together and with a strong network of partners on campus and in the community, the institutions commit to prevention education and supports in order to be part of the solution.
The survey results help shed light on a serious societal issue and provide an opportunity to bring together the considerable strengths of both institutions to help bring an end to sexual violence.
