Fleming College Celebrates Indigenous Heritage Month
Peterborough, ON (June 12, 2023) – Each June, Fleming College celebrates the rich culture, contributions, and diversity of Indigenous People across the northern part of Turtle Island during Ode’min Giizis (Strawberry Moon).
The Sutherland, Frost and Haliburton Campuses will have posters displayed that celebrate the contributions to our shared society made by Indigenous people. These posters have been created by Indigenous Student Services. Campuses will also host a slideshow featuring information about Indigenous inventions that have impacted modern-day sports, medicine, and technology.
Staff and students will have the opportunity to learn about traditional Indigenous territories and treaties on an interactive map that can be accessed via a QR code posted in the Indigenous Student Services lounge and on Fleming College and Indigenous Student Services social media channels.
Fleming College students have the option to take the Indigenous Perspectives Designation (IPD), which provides those students with a more in-depth knowledge of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples, and their cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions to our shared society.
The IPD designation is now offered in conjunction with more than 40 programs. There are approximately 2,100 alumni who have graduated with the IPD designation.
Fleming College is grateful for the opportunity to work and teach here and we thank all the generations of people who have taken care of this land for thousands of years. We recognize the contributions of Métis, Inuit, and other Indigenous peoples, both in shaping and strengthening this community and country as a whole.
