Fleming College celebrates the groundbreaking of the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre
Fleming College hosted an official groundbreaking on July 16, 2012, to celebrate the start of construction on the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre (KTTC). The KTTC will be an 87, 000-square-foot facility used to teach and train students from Fleming College, regional secondary schools and regional industry.
“We are excited to start construction on the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre, a facility that will provide a much-needed space for trades and technology training,” said Fleming College President Dr. Tony Tilly. “The KTTC will be a regional hub for trades and technology education, and we are thrilled to create this vital resource for skilled trades students in Peterborough and the Kawarthas.”
The groundbreaking took place onsite at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus in Peterborough, Ont., and featured speeches by Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities Glen Murray, Peterborough MPP Jeff Leal, Mayor Daryl Bennett, Peterborough MP Dean Del Mastro, Fleming College President Dr. Tony Tilly, and Fleming College Board Chair Peter McLean.
“We recognize that enhancing our apprenticeship and training system is essential to building the skilled workforce Ontario needs to compete in the new economy,” said Minister Glen Murray. “That’s why we’re investing more than $29 million for the new Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre.”
The Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre will feature sustainable shop facilities, smart-wired classrooms and labs with the newest technology. The facility will provide new space and equipment for training in areas such as carpentry, masonry, welding, plumbing, electrical and engineering programs.
“The Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre will establish Peterborough as a leading Ontario and Canadian jurisdiction in training for jobs in the 21st Century,” said Peterborough MPP Jeff Leal. “Every community, every region must have the opportunity to contribute to the growth and well-being of Ontario. Our investment will benefit not only Peterborough, but the province as a whole.”
Completion of the KTTC is scheduled for April 2014, and will be in full operation in September 2014. Elite Construction Inc. has been awarded the contract for construction.
