Fleming College recently completed a comprehensive master plan for its Sutherland Campus in Peterborough. The plan identifies strategies to improve the student and visitor experience in the existing buildings and recommendations to integrate potential new facilities. “We have a strong vision for the future of the campus and this planning process has identified significant opportunities for the development of the campus to better serve students for years ahead,” said Tony Tilly, president of the college. “This process has also allowed us to fully integrate the plans for the proposed Kawartha Skilled Trades Institute into our longer-term strategies.”The plan contains recommendations for overall land use, roadways, entrances, gates, pathways, parking, fields and landscaping. It shows ways to improve the image and sense of arrival to the main entrance foyer and other interior gathering spaces.“While some of this work is contemplated for well in the future, some of it has already begun,” said Barb Cameron, vice president, finance and facilities. “We will begin construction on a project to improve the entrance to the main building this summer.”The Sutherland Campus is Fleming College’s largest campus, set on 245 acres in Peterborough’s west end, with 338,000 gross square feet (gsf) of academic space in the main building, a residence village and a recreation centre. The plan was prepared by architectural and planning consultants duToit Allsopp Hiller, CS&P, and AECOM and involved a series of consultation sessions with Fleming students, faculty and staff.
