Peterborough, ON – September 9, 2010 – Preliminary enrolment numbers for the first day of the 2010 fall semester at Fleming College are higher than planned with approximately 5,980 students starting classes this week, representing a 5.7 percent increase in overall enrolment over 2009.

With final numbers to be confirmed at the end of the registration period, 3,400 students are currently enrolled in first semester classes, well ahead of projections and currently more than two percent ahead of last year.

These strong results follow an unprecedented 18 percent increase for incoming students in the fall of 2009.

“We were expecting a slight decline following last year’s tremendous results, but we are very pleased that our enrolment continues to grow beyond the results from fall of 2009,” said Fleming College President Tony Tilly.

“The 2010 enrolment levels reflect our ongoing commitment to developing unique programs and delivering all of our learning experiences with a hands-on, applied learning approach delivered in a personalized setting by experienced and committed faculty and staff,” said Tilly. “We are attracting a growing number of mature students seeking new skills as the job market continues to change.”

In Peterborough, pathway programs in the School of General Arts and Sciences experienced double digit growth through the launch of a new General Arts and Science – Environmental and Natural Resource Studies program and continued growth in its University Transfer program.

Other recently launched programs contributed to overall growth at the college’s Peterborough campuses including: Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technician, Office Administration, Electrical Engineering Technician, and Fitness and Health Promotion.

Total enrolment at the Sutherland-Brealey and Sutherland-McRae campuses in Peterborough grew approximately four per cent and now stands at over 4,100 students.

Environmental and natural resource sciences programming at the Frost Campus in Lindsay has continued to attract an increasing number of students. Overall enrolment at the Frost Campus grew more than eight percent. There are now more than 1,700 students enrolled in environmental, natural resources and community services programs at the Frost Campus.

The Haliburton Campus has grown significantly through the launch of a new Sustainable Renovations program and growth in the Visual and Creative Arts diploma program.

The college will release its final enrolment numbers based on the tenth day of classes later in September.
