Fleming College Invests in Aboriginal Students
Peterborough ON –New staff, programs, workshops and outreach assistance are in Fleming’s new action plan for Aboriginal students. Approximately $242,000 in provincial funding will focus on new initiatives at Fleming towards improving access and participation rates among Aboriginal leaner’s to post secondary education. "This funding will allow Fleming College to extend programs and services for aboriginal students. We will also be able to expand our work with Aboriginal communities. We are grateful to the government of Ontario for this increased level of support," said Fleming College President Tony Tilly. Fleming currently offers culturally appropriate curriculum and links with Aboriginal communities through our Aboriginal Education Council. The college will be focusing on the enhancement of the Aboriginal Emphasis Initiative and expanding the access to cultural resources and events. Fleming has hired a full-time Aboriginal Student Success Facilitator and a part-time Aboriginal Outreach and Liaison Officer and will also be providing additional Aboriginal Student Counselling services. Campuses will offer Academic Success Workshops for current Aboriginal students, Employment Success Workshops for graduating students and Transition programs to help students at the beginning of their term. Fleming will also be investing in the enhancement of the Aboriginal student spaces at both the Sutherland and Frost campuses. The funding is part of a new initiative by the province to ensure more Aboriginal students have access to and are given the tools for success in their post secondary educational institutions. The funding is part of a multi-year commitment to Colleges. Fleming’s future focuses will be on youth summer experiences and on-campus housing. Named for famous Canadian inventor and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming, the college features more than 90 full-time programs in Business and Technology, Continuing Education and Skilled Trades, Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Fine Arts, Health and Wellness, and Law, Justice and Community Services.
