Fleming College Joins Project Hero Fleming launches scholarship program to help children of fallen Canadian military members receive post-secondary education. Peterborough ON – February 24, 2010 – Fleming College will now be providing financial assistance to the children of Canadian Forces personnel who have died in active mission since 2002.Students will be provided with free tuition for six semesters and free on-campus residence for the student’s first year. Project Hero becomes effective at Fleming September 1, 2010. Fleming is the 22nd Canadian postsecondary institution to participate in the program. "All Canadians are aware of the sacrifices of our troops, including loss of life. Fleming College will join colleges and universities across the country in support of sons and daughters who are deeply affected by this sacrifice and the loss of a parent,” said Fleming President Tony Tilly. Project Hero was founded by retired Canadian General Rick Hillier and Kevin Reed in 2009 to help children of fallen military receive an education in Canada. The program will be in effect until 2014. Project Hero eligible recipients must be: A dependent child of a Canadian Forces member who died while serving in an active mission A Canadian citizen or permanent resident Under the age of 26 Accepted and registered as a full-time student at Fleming College in a program of study eligible for funding by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The first term of eligibility cannot be prior to September 2010 Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campuses in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton. Named for famous Canadian inventor and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming, the college features more than 90 full-time programs in Business and Technology, Continuing Education and Skilled Trades, Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Fine Arts, Health and Wellness, and Law, Justice and Community Services.
