Fleming College Marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Fleming College is marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with a day of education and listening, while finalizing plans to roll out Indigenous Awareness training relevant to the college experience for all staff in early 2023.
Events are planned for all three of Fleming’s campuses. These events are opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to learn about the lasting impact of the residential school system, while exploring the barriers Indigenous people have overcome and the successes Indigenous communities have achieved.
The Day for Truth and Reconciliation will be marked on Sept. 29 at the Frost Campus and Sept. 30 at the Sutherland and Haliburton Campuses.
Schedule of Events for Sept. 29 at the Frost Campus:
- 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Orange Shirt sales and orange rock painting.
- 10 a.m. A talk with Indigenous artist and Alderville First Nation resident Rick Beaver, Glenn Combie Theatre.
- 11 a.m. A reading of “Phyllis’s Orange Shirt,” Glenn Combie Theatre
- 1 p.m. A reading and talk with Indigenous poet and City of Peterborough Poet Laureate Sarah Lewis, Glenn Combie Theatre.
- 2 p.m. Orange Shirt Walk and rock placing.
Schedule of Events for Sept. 30 at the Sutherland Campus:
- 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Orange shirt sales from Nish Tees and orange rock painting.
- 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. A “Living Library” featuring Indigenous Fleming alumni and members of the local Indigenous community. Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to listen to their experiences and ask questions, Main Foyer.
- 10:30 a.m. A reading of “Phyllis’s Orange Shirt,” Whetung Theatre.
- 11 a.m. A reading and talk with Indigenous poet and City of Peterborough Poet Laureate Sarah Lewis, Whetung Theatre.
- 1:30 p.m. Orange Shirt Walk and rock placing.
- 2 p.m. A screening of “The Secret Path: The Chanie Wenjack Story,”
Whetung Theatre.

- 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Orange Shirt sales and rock painting
- 11:30 a.m. Official Welcome and a screening of “The Secret Path: The Chanie Wenjack Story.”
- 12:30 p.m. A reading of “Phyllis’s Orange Shirt.”
- 1 p.m. Orange Shirt Walk and rock placement.
