Fleming College

Peterborough ON – (March 27, 2019) – Preparing graduates for the evolving workplace was the driving force behind the newly renovated A-Wing at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus. The updated space will serve more than 3,000 students and the facility will ensure programs continue to provide effective training to meet the evolving labour market needs.

After years of planning, design and construction, the A-Wing was officially opened on March 27 at Fleming College’s Sutherland Campus in Peterborough.

“This is a tremendous milestone for the college and the updated A-Wing now better provides opportunities for our students to prepare for today’s dynamic workforce,” said Maureen Adamson, President, Fleming College. “The multi-purpose facility provides increased capacity for on-campus work-integrated learning opportunities and great access to simulations for task-based and scenario-based learning. This is another way Fleming is committed to producing the preferred graduate.”

The training facility cost $12.46 million to build, with $6.23 million coming from the Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, via the Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund (SIF). The remainder was funded through from the provincial government, Fleming Student Administrative Council (SAC) and donor support.

“Our Government created the Strategic Investment Fund for post-secondary institutions in order to respond to a need to improve and enhance infrastructure on campuses across the country,” said Maryam Monsef, Member of Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha. “Our federal contribution of $6.23 million towards the renewal of the A-Wing building at Sutherland Campus will support our future nurses, occupational therapists, paramedics and more as they prepare to enter the workforce and fill much-needed positions in the health sciences.”

SIF further funded a renovation to the GeoCentre and environmental sciences area at Frost Campus. The federal government contributed $2.26 million to that project with another $2.26 million funded by Fleming for a total cost of $4,520,500.

The 76,000-square-foot building at Sutherland Campus houses programs that include nursing, biotechnology, fitness and health promotion, occupational therapy and physiotherapy, paramedic, and personal support worker, as well as programs within the areas of justice and community development, business and culinary management.

The SAC Transit Lounge, located on the second floor of the A-Wing, was generously donated by Fleming Student Administrative Council (SAC). The SAC Transit Lounge is a dedicated indoor area for students and includes soft seating, phone charging stations and is easily visible to transit.

“The SAC Transit Lounge further complements our efforts to make student transportation accessible and affordable,” said Christopher Smith, General Manager, Fleming Student Administrative Council. “SAC is committed to increasing transportation options for students and we are pleased to offer a space that is functional and welcoming.”

Filled with natural light, the A-Wing features modern aesthetic appeal rich in simulation spaces, formal and informal student areas and leading-edge technology to further support applied learning and student success.

“We are extremely grateful to the Strategic Investment Fund for recognizing the need for a renovation such as this,” continued Adamson. “I would also like to acknowledge the many community partners, donors and Fleming SAC, who contributed to this facility.”

Dignitaries cut the ribbon in the SAC Transit Lounge to officially open the A-Wing on March 27.
