Fleming College

Peterborough, ON – May 24, 2012 – Gayle McIntyre, Program Coordinator of the Arts and Heritage programs at Fleming College, and Carolyn Sirett, a 2012 graduate of the Collections Conservation and Management program, will both be receiving awards at the 38^th annual Canadian Association for Conservation of Cultural Property Conference.

The Conference, which runs from May 22 to May 26, 2012, welcomes conservators from across North America to discuss issues related to preserving and conserving cultural property. The awards will be presented on Friday, May 25, 2012.

Gayle McIntyre will be receiving the Charles Mervyn Ruggles Award, which recognizes an individual’s outstanding contributions and achievement in conservation science, treatment, training and/or education; and for development work in the field of conservation in Canada, and promoting the ethics and ideals expressed in the CAC/CAPC Code of Ethics and Guidance for Practice. Gayle is a graduate of the Art Conservation Techniques program at Fleming College, and began her career as the Site Conservator for Lang Pioneer Village. She became an instructor at Fleming and, in 1996, was named Program Coordinator of the Collections Conservation and Management, Museum Management and Curatorship, and the Aboriginal Heritage Interpretation (offered as a one time delivery) Arts and Heritage programs.

“I can’t believe I’m at this stage in my career, it feels like not that long ago I was starting out,” said Gayle. “It’s such an honour to be recognized and put in the same category as the previous winners and the namesake of the award. I’m extremely honoured and humbled, and grateful to those who took the time to put together the nomination package.”

Gayle is also excited for 2012 Fleming grad Carolyn Sirett, who will be awarded the Emerging Conservator Award. “I’m delighted for Carolyn. She is the epitome of what that award represents,” said Gayle. “She is a quiet leader who is going to land on her feet in the field.”

Carolyn will soon be handed her diploma from the Collections Conservation and Management program at Fleming College. Carolyn also has an Advanced Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Manitoba, which she received in 2008.  The Emerging Conservator Award recognizes the outstanding effort and accomplishment of an individual during the course of full-time studies in a Canadian conservation training program, which is demonstrated by academic performance, contribution to the field of conservation, leadership, and promotion of the ethics and ideals expressed in the CAC/CAPC Code of Ethics and Guidance for Practice.
