Strategic Mandate Agreement highlights work integrated learning, environmental education and productivity as keys to future prosperity

Peterborough ON – (Oct. 12, 2012) – As part of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities’ review of postsecondary education in Ontario, Fleming College has submitted its eight-page strategic mandate agreement to Minister Glen Murray.

The Ministry asked colleges and universities to identify their top three priorities over the next five years and the resultant impact on students, enrolment, budgets and communities. Fleming’s three priorities are: breaking down the barriers between education and the workplace through work integrated learning, continued development of its Centre of Excellence in environmental education at the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences in Lindsay, and productivity and innovation efforts through lean initiatives, resource sharing and revenue generation. 

“This exercise has been very valuable for Fleming as we reflect on our progress at the halfway point of our 2010-2015 Strategic Plan and look ahead to further innovation and opportunities,” said Tony Tilly, Fleming College president. “We will work in concert with our education, community and business partners in building opportunities for all students in our region and attracting new ones to our campuses from across the province and beyond.”

Key themes throughout the report include partnerships with Trent University and other postsecondary institutions, regional school boards, municipal governments, community groups and business and industry. These partnerships drive innovation in programming, opportunities for students learning and working in our communities, and increased access to postsecondary education. The construction of the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre, currently underway at the Sutherland Campus, and the future construction of new sports fields on the same campus, are strong examples of facilities, programs and initiatives driven by such partnerships.

Fleming’s unique program portfolio and 40-year history in environmental and natural resource sciences education makes it a strong choice for a Centre of Excellence designation. The Frost Campus in Lindsay has introduced innovative programs and approaches to applied learning to meet the needs of employers in emerging “green” careers. Internationally-recognized applied research in water technologies is led by the Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment, also based at the Frost Campus.
