Fleming College wins gold, bronze medals at Ontario Technological Skills Competition
Fleming College Welding and Fabrication Technician (WFT) student Roland Timleck brought home a gold medal this week from the Ontario Technological Skills Competition.
The gold medal finish in the welding category will allow him to compete at the upcoming Skills Canada National Competition to be held June 5-8 in Moncton, NB.
“Roland is a very hardworking, dedicated student but also a very humble student. He took the criticism of his professors in a positive manner and used it to grow his skills as a welder,” said Darryl Madussi, Coordinator of the Welding and Fabrication Technician program. “Roland’s dedication to being the best is what put him on top of the podium. He spent countless hours in the lab practicing and honing his welding skills in preparation for the competition.”
Fleming WFT student Miranda Phillips placed fourth in the competition. Both Phillips and Timleck are members of the first graduating class of WFT at Fleming College. The program is located in the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre at Sutherland Campus.
“All of the faculty members here in the welding program were very supportive and everybody pitched in to guide Roland to be the best that he could be. We are all very proud of his success and wish him the best of luck representing Fleming College and Team Ontario at the Skills Canada National Competition in Moncton,” said Madussi.
Fleming excelled in the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (HRAC) competition as well. HRAC student Ryan Rutledge won bronze in that category. Students from Fleming also competed in carpentry and culinary competitions at the event.
OTSC, held in Waterloo from May 2 to 4, provides an opportunity for top trades and technology students to demonstrate they are the best in their field. Winners are awarded gold, silver or bronze medals and the opportunity to compete nationally at the Skills Canada National Competition. There are more than 67 contests, 2,000 competitors and 20,000 spectators at the event.
