Fleming Students to Showcase Skills at Provincial Competition

Peterborough ON – May 13, 2010 – Students from Fleming College will test their skills and experience at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition next week in Waterloo. Approximately 1,800 elementary, secondary and postsecondary students from all over Ontario will be competing in categories from aircraft maintenance to welding in the largest two-day skilled trade’s competition in Canada. The competition will test the skills and talents of tomorrow’s trade professionals. There will be eleven students from Fleming College in the competition from college campuses in Peterborough and Cobourg. Six Culinary Program Students – Two students competing in Baking, two students competing in Restaurant Services and two students competing in the Culinary Arts categories. Two Welding Techniques Program Students – Both competing in the Welding categoryOne Carpentry Program Student – Competing in the Individual Carpentry category.Two Esthetician Program Students – Both will be competing in the Aesthetic Skills category.  Students have been coached by Fleming College faculty including the Coordinators of the Culinary Program Chef Steve Benns, Chef Dave Hawey and Sylvie Provost, Construction Skills Program Coordinator Phil Stagg and Esthetician Program Coordinator Tracy Partridge.  Winners from the provincial competition will move on to The Canadian Skills Competition on May 20th to 23rd.  At the 2009 Ontario Technological Skills Competition, Fleming Esthetician students won silver and bronze medals, and a Fleming culinary student advanced to the national competition and returned home with a gold medal.Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campuses in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton.
