Fleming College

Aboriginal Student Services at Fleming College will celebrate the opening of the new Frost Campus Tipi with a ceremonial fire on Thursday, Nov. 22.

All are welcome to attend the opening ceremony, which will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. It will consist of a teaching from Elders Shirley Williams and Gerard Sagassige as well as the lighting of the first fire, drumming, and a light lunch. There will be a formal acknowledgement of the Frost Student Association for its ongoing support and financial contribution toward funding the new Tipi for the campus.

At the opening ceremony, the Aboriginal student community will present a hand drum – made by the students – to the mother of Patrick Beatty. Patrick is a former student of Fleming College who passed on to the spirit world in January 2011. Friends and family of Patrick are invited to stay after lunch to socialize and celebrate Patrick’s life.

The Frost Campus Tipi will be a source of ceremony, relationship building, cross-cultural understanding, and a place of sharing and reflection. For more information on the opening ceremony, please contact Aboriginal Student Services at 705-324-9144 x 3444.
