Published

City of Kawartha Lakes ON – (January 26, 2018) – Fleming College’s Frost Campus will join the conversation and raise awareness for mental health on Bell Let’s Talk Day on Wednesday, January 31.

The Frost Campus Mental Health Initiative Team will host a variety of free activities for the campus community, including a visit from therapy dogs, fun games, and free popcorn.

Stationary bikes will be available for students and employees to ride. These will represent Bell Let’s Talk Day spokesperson Clara Hughes’ ride for mental health that took place in 2014. Participants will be invited to ‘cycle across Canada.’ The total number of kilometres will be tracked with the goal of logging the distance it would take to complete a cross-Canada cycle.

There will be opportunities for dialogue and students will be invited talk about what mental health means to them. Representatives from the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit, City of Kawartha Lakes Police, and the Canadian Mental Health Association will be part of events at the campus that day.

“We believe that engaging in the conversation about what mental health means to us helps to normalize our experience with mental health struggles and ultimately reduces the stigma attached,” said Melissa McQuaid, Counsellor and member of the Frost Mental Health Initiative Team.

All events will take place on the Discovery Trail between noon and 2 p.m. that day.
