Haliburton ON – (April 22, 2009) – New courses and workshops at Fleming College’s Haliburton School of The Arts are helping to demonstrate an environmental consciousness rooted in the arts. Furniture Repainted and TransformedDo you have a piece of furniture that doesn’t fit the interior of your home or a wonderful old gem in your cottage or garage? Go green – recycle, repurpose and rejuvenate that chair, table or cabinet. Instructor Margot Miller will teach students standard and decorative painting techniques, transformative methods such as changing the length of table legs, adding new feet, incorporating scroll work, hand-painting a cushion, or changing texture and colour to create a work of art. Instruction will accommodate all levels of skill. Bring your own piece of small furniture to transform. This course runs the week of July 20, 2009. Repurposed MaterialsThe treasured tablecloth from family celebrations, the curtain from the kitchen window of the family cottage, or salvaged remnants bound for the landfill can be given a new decorative and functional purpose. Learn how to obtain and reuse fabric from sources other than new and create a one-of-a-kind handbag or tote. This weeklong course is taught by Vicky Gerke and takes place the week of Aug. 3, 2009. Re-Usable Bag WorkshopThe three Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – are the three pillars of recycling philosophy. Thinking of the three Rs can help reduce your shopping bill as well as the impact on the environment. Transform an old umbrella, an old jean skirt or something else into a one-of-a-kind eco-friendly grocery bag and reduce the use of plastic bags. Basic sewing skills are needed for this workshop, which takes place on Aug. 1, 2009. The Re-Usable Bag workshop will be taught by Evelyn Bouma, an icon in the world of upholstery and innovative interior design. Upholstery WorkshopAlso taught by Evelyn Bouma, the Upholstery workshop on July 25, 2009 will again apply the principles of the three Rs. Upholster a footstool and discover how to redesign family heirlooms to blend with the décor of your home. Basic techniques will be applied to a footstool kit which will be supplied in class. Students are also invited to bring a small piece of furniture you would like to reupholster such as a dining chair or stool.In the striking setting of the Haliburton Highlands you will find a campus that serves the arts, the environment and the local community. The Haliburton School of The Arts is well-known for its 15-week intensive, in-studio certificate programs and its extensive summer arts programming. Hundreds of courses for individuals of all ages are offered between May and September.
