 Peterborough ON – (April 3, 2017) – Student innovation and hands-on learning will be on display at the Fleming College Innovation and Technology Showcase in partnership with Bell on Thursday, April 6.

“We’re excited to be highlighting the skills and innovative spirit of our students, who really are the technology and business leaders of the future,” said Maxine Mann, Dean of the School of Business and the School of Trades and Technology.

Hosted at the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre (KTTC), the event is a showcase of experiential learning in action. Over the winter, students from the School of Business and School of Trades and Technology have worked with local businesses and non-profit organizations to find innovative solutions to a business- or technology-related problem. The students gain academic credit and on-the-job experience by undertaking supervised applied projects. At the same time, the project results provide new information, answer questions, contribute to planning, and lay the groundwork for future innovations.

“Through their applied projects, students at Fleming make a valuable contribution to the local community and economy. As well, the applied projects help to prepare students to be high performers in their careers and stimulate their entrepreneurial spirit,” said Dean Mann. “Their participation in the Showcase lets them highlight their accomplishments, gain confidence and build their network, particularly fitting as this year’s Showcase theme is ‘Problem Solvers. Risk Takers. Solution Makers.’ Thank you to Bell for supporting the Innovation and Technology Showcase.”

The 33 projects will be judged with prizes awarded at the conclusion of the Showcase.

Members of the public are invited to attend the event and view the projects, which will be on display from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the KTTC at Sutherland Campus.

In addition to the project displays, a panel discussion will take place at 2 p.m. Innovation, anywhere, anytime will feature Neil Morton of PTBOCanada.com and Rob Howard of Kawartha Local, and will be moderated by Javier Bravo of FastStart Fleming.

Here are just a few of the projects that will be on display at the Showcase:

• Magic Mirror – A mirror that answers your questions and displays news, weather and the current time;
• Peterborough Transit App – Developing a database and apps for various operating systems that can track and provide real-time location of City of Peterborough transit buses;
• Automatic Vacuum Cleaner – Fleming’s own robotic vacuum, it uses sensors to turn and stop when there is movement;
• Sellin’ Gellin – Exporting to the soccer community in Europe, this innovative Canadian-designed product has the potential to reduce the severity of head trauma incurred in sport;
• How High? – Working with the Rotary Club of Peterborough to import a range of handcrafted items from small businesswomen in Nepal.
