Published

Lindsay ON – (July 13, 2015) – High school students will gain hands-on experience in compass practice and drilling as part of the Ecosystem Skills summer dual credit course at Fleming College. The course is being delivered at Curve Lake over the month of July in partnership with Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, Curve Lake and Alderville First Nations.  Students will be visiting the Frost Campus on Tuesday, July 14.

The Ecosystem Skills course focuses on identification, field and lab skills. Students will identify living and non-living components of specific ecosystems, and will learn to navigate through the natural environment by using a variety of ecosystem inventory techniques. Students will complete a drilling activity from 10 a.m. to noon, and compass practice will run from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

“Dual credit courses provide students with the opportunity to discover college while still in secondary school.  Students learn about the different teaching style, expectations and classroom experiences that make the college system unique.  Many students that have participated in the dual credit program have stated that the experience has made them more confident in their ability to succeed in post-secondary education,” says William Howe, Manager of Dual Credit Operations at Fleming College.

The Dual Credit program offers students the opportunity to obtain a secondary school credit and college credit simultaneously. Fleming College offers dual credit courses to approximately 40 secondary schools across Peterborough and the Kawarthas, and approximately 1700 students participate in the program each year.  The Dual Credit program eases the transition to post-secondary school, and gives students a head-start on learning and training for their future careers.
