January enrolment numbers soar
First semester student enrolment increases 12 per cent over last year. Over 140 students enrol through Second Career program. There are many more students in the halls of Fleming College this winter. January 2009 enrolment for first semester students at Fleming College has soared, jumping 12 per cent over last year. The college has 854 students starting full-time programs this winter compared to 763 in January 2008.Overall, full-time enrolment in all semesters is up two per cent from last winter and now stands at 5,012 students. The School of Continuing Education and Skilled Trades and the School of Law, Justice and Community Services had the greatest increase in first semester students. Popular programs within these schools include Electrical Techniques, Paralegal, Social Service Worker, and Community and Justice Services. “We’re thrilled by these numbers, ” said Fleming College President Tony Tilly. “Our academic division, registrar’s office and marketing team have worked very hard to respond to the needs of prospective students. We made program and promotional changes to attract those students considering a return to college during these challenging economic times. “The provincial government ’s Second Career program has been tremendously successful here at Fleming. Very early on we established a dedicated team to provide service to students seeking training and funding through this new initiative, as well as through existing funding programs. Over 140 students enrolled this January received funding from the Second Career program.” The January intake increase follows a two per cent increase in enrolment in September 2008. “These results are a testament to the reputation of Fleming College and the hard work of our faculty and staff to ensure students get the most from their college experience,” said Dr. Tilly. – 30 -For more information: Laura Copeland, Communications Officer, 705-749-5530 x 1370 or copeland@flemingc.on.ca
