Kawartha Cast Iron Chef Competition and Dinner
Two elite culinary teams will battle it out for the title of Kawartha Cast Iron Chef on Wednesday, October 24 as Fleming College’s culinary programs partner up with the Kawartha Culinary Association to host the Kawartha Cast Iron Chef Competition and Dinner.The competition, which raises funds for culinary scholarships, will feature local chefs Evan Podd of the Old Bridge Inn (Young’s Point), Brian Cassibo of the Tin Mill (Uxbridge), Christopher Ennew from Ste. Anne’s Inn and Spa (Grafton), and Justin Guyatt, a culinary consultant in Peterborough. The chefs will partner with culinary students from the college and local high schools. Each team will be made up of two secondary school students, two first semester Fleming culinary students, two third semester Fleming culinary students and two local chefs.The teams must each prepare and serve a five-course meal for 36 people. Each meal consists of soup, hot appetizer, cold appetizer, entrée, and dessert. One of each plate will be presented for public viewing and voting (people’s choice), five will be presented for the judging panel and the remaining 30 will be served to guests. The teams are judged in three categories – Kitchen (culinary skill, sanitation and safety, team work, plating skill, waste, and timing), Dining Room (taste, presentation, culinary skill, temperature, and creativity), and People’s Choice.Tickets are $60 per person, and are available at Fulford’s Dining Room at Fleming College, 749-5530 ext. 1487 and In A Nuttshell in Lakefield, 652-7814. The competition will get underway at 5:30 p.m. at Fulford’s Dining Room at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus, 599 Brealey Dr. in Peterborough.Proceeds from the competition and dinner will go toward the Kawartha Culinary Association’s scholarship fund, which assists new, returning, and graduating students in Fleming’s renowned culinary programs – Culinary Management, Cook Apprentice and Chef Training.Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campuses in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton.
