New diploma to degree agreement between Fleming College and Lakehead University
City of Kawartha Lakes ON – (April 14, 2015) – Fleming College’s School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences and Lakehead University’s Faculty of Natural Resources Management have signed an agreement that allows Fleming students to graduate with a diploma and a degree in just four years.
The agreement applies to five of Fleming’s two-year diploma programs:
– Environmental Technician
– Ecosystem Management Technician
– Fish and Wildlife Technician
– Forestry Technician
– Urban Forestry Technician
Following completion of the diploma program, Fleming students must take a one month transition program (offered in August) and can then go on to take one of two degree pathways – an Honours Bachelor of Environmental Management or an Honours Bachelor of Science in Forestry. Both degrees are offered at Lakehead’s Thunder Bay campus.
“The degree programs offered at Lakehead University are complementary to our diploma programs at the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences at the Frost Campus. This articulation agreement allows a Fleming graduate to earn a diploma and an honours degree in just four years and provides them with greater opportunities for advancement in their careers,” says Linda Skilton, Principal of the Frost Campus and Dean of the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences.
“Fleming students who have chosen to come to our programs in the past have done exceptionally well, and I am very pleased to see this process expand in our 50th anniversary year as a University,” said Ulf Runesson, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Resources Management at Lakehead.
“Our Faculty has a long and proud tradition of preparing students for professional practice (and research) in all aspects of land and water stewardship, and the presence of Fleming transfer students makes a lot of sense. Fleming transfer students who choose to add a degree as part of a four-year experience shared between our schools will not only receive two years of extra education but will also be in a position to assemble a competitive portfolio for rewarding careers. Lakehead’s tagline states: exceptional. un-conventional. Based on my own experience with Fleming graduates – they fit well into our approach of portfolio-building.”
While students must meet certain requirements to enter the degree programs, Lakehead will assign each incoming Fleming student with a faculty mentor to ensure a smooth transition and maximize the students’ progression through the program.
