Fleming College

Fleming College is launching seven new programs in a range of study areas for fall 2013. They include two-year diploma programs, one-year certificate programs, and graduate certificate programs at both the Sutherland Campus in Peterborough and the Frost Campus in Lindsay.

• Urban Forestry Technician Co-op (Frost Campus): This program was developed in collaboration with University of New Brunswick (UNB). Through this partnership, the Urban Forestry Technician program is planned as a pathway to a university degree. Students spend two years at Fleming’s Frost Campus and two years at UNB, earning both a college diploma in Urban Forestry and a Bachelor of Science in Forestry (Urban Forestry Emphasis) degree.
• Developmental Services Worker (Sutherland Campus): This two-year (four semesters, two field placements), diploma program is designed to provide the specialized skills required for workers in the developmental service sector. Graduates will have the knowledge, skills and attitudes to support the empowerment of people with developmental disabilities.
• Therapeutic Recreation (Sutherland Campus): It is a three-semester post-graduate certificate program that prepares graduates for work in recreation, health or social service areas. Students learn to use a wide range of interventions and techniques to improve the physical, cognitive, emotional, social and leisure needs of clients.
• Aquaculture (Frost Campus): This compressed, one-year program is the only program offered as a post-graduate certificate in Ontario. Food aquaculture operations include hatcheries and processing plants. Aquaculture also comprises restocking for species at risk, restoration activities, and bait fish operations. Global demand for aquaculture products is growing, along with demands for stewardship, conservation, sustainability and food safety and security.
• Outdoor and Adventure Education (Frost Campus): This two-semester program builds on the Outdoor Adventure Skills program at Frost Campus, adding a second year of courses that connect outdoor skills, the environment and education. Students add further training opportunities in rock climbing, multi-day backpacking, edible wilds, snowshoeing, dog sledding and Nordic skiing.
• Human Services Foundation (Sutherland Campus): The program provides an opportunity to learn about careers in community services, strengthen academic skills and obtain a foundation for further studies and career development. This two-semester certificate program enables graduates to enter the second semester of these Fleming diploma programs: Child and Youth Worker, Community and Justice Services, Developmental Service Worker, Drug and Alcohol Counsellor, Social Service Worker, Police Foundations.
• Applied and Community-Based Research (Frost Campus): The two-semester, post-graduate program takes a holistic, integrated approach to applied research. Students learn to use various research methodologies and advanced project management skills. The program focuses on a project related to sustainability issues to enhance the social, environmental, economic and cultural health of a community.
