Tour of the campus
Fleming’s Board met at the Frost Campus on Oct. 27 where governors received a guided tour of ongoing renovations from Randy Prentice, capital projects manager at the college.

A number of changes have occurred at the campus. The board room has returned to its original location in room 252, and the registrar’s office is now located in the former dean’s office. The staff lounge is now in room 230.

Governors also toured the new pathology lab, which features increased lab space, two morgue freezers and one morgue refrigerator, hot-warm-cold biohazard protection for students, and display cases for specimens

New programs approved
At the meeting, governors approved two new programs – Child and Youth Worker, a three-year advanced diploma program to be offered at Sutherland Campus, and Sustainable Trails, a certificate program that focuses on the theory and skill in designing, building and maintaining trails.

Updates
Kate Craney, president of the Frost Student Association, and Alicia Timbers, vice president athletics for the Frost SA provided governors with an update on the association’s activities. These included bringing a public transit bus stop onto campus.

Ms. Craney said the SA is working on putting students first, improving customer service of the association and improving school spirit.

Linda Skilton, Principal of the Frost Campus, also provided governors with an update on campus events. The Frost Campus ban on the sale of bottled water means Fleming is the first college in Canada to do so. It was also the first of four postsecondary institutions to receive official accreditation for its environmental technology program.

The campus has grown in recent years from about 1,300 students to close to 1,800.

November/December
Governors hosted a “meet and greet” in the Sutherland Campus main foyer, prior to their December 1st meeting.

With hot apple cider and Christmas treats on the menu, governors met with staff and students.

Premier’s Award winner Belinda Junkin was also in attendance to meet with the Fleming community.

Updates
At the meeting, Student Administrative Council (SAC) president Cameron Bradley and Denise Bloomer, vice president of student affairs, updated governors on SAC’s activities throughout the fall.

The SAC held a referendum Nov. 10-11 on the approval of a student levy to fund the renovation of the SAC offices, the student centre and the Steele Centre.

Students approved the levy and SAC is working closely with the college on the project.
