Fleming College

Fleming College celebrated the completion of extensive upgrades to its Sutherland Campus with a Renovation Celebration on Feb. 11.

“We wanted to welcome the community and share our new look, as well as acknowledge the generosity of the provincial government in funding these capital projects,” said Fleming College President Tony Tilly. “We offer thanks for the efforts of our staff in creating this modernized and reinvigorated campus. It has been many months of hard work for everyone involved.”

Local dignitaries, guests, students and staff gathered in the newly-updated main foyer for the festivities, which included tours of the campus.

In May 2009 Peterborough MPP Jeff Leal announced funding for Fleming College through the Strategic Capital Infrastructure Program (SCIP). The college received $11.7 million to fund infrastructure projects and upgrade the campus.

The bulk of construction was completed in summer and fall 2010 at the Sutherland, Frost, and McRae campuses. Renovations include:

• New front entrance
• Renovated main foyer
• Updated Learning Resource Commons
• New pathology lab (Frost)
• Updated 6th floor and Fulford’s Dining Lounge
• Renovated Registrar’s Office (Sutherland)
• Enhanced skills training spaces (McRae)
• Updated Whetung Theatre

“The construction on campus inevitably led to some disruptions to regular routines for our staff and students. I want to thank everyone for their patience in seeing this through to the end result, which is truly amazing,” said President Tilly.

A portion of the SCIP funding went toward preliminary work on the Kawartha Skilled Trades Institute (KSTI). The investment has allowed Fleming College to move ahead with design and planning of the KSTI, which would replace the outdated McRae trades training facility, and increase student capacity by up to 500 students.

Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campus locations in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton. Named for famous Canadian inventor and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming, the college features more than 90 full-time programs in Business and Technology, Continuing Education and Skilled Trades, Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Visual Arts, Education, Health and Wellness, and Law, Justice and Community Services. Fleming College has more than 6,000 full-time and 10,000 part-time students, and 58,000 alumni.
