Published

Peterborough ON – June 29, 2010 – Fleming College has unveiled a tribute to its namesake, the inventor of standard time and one of Peterborough’s most famous residents, Sir Sandford Fleming.  A bronze likeness of the famous Canadian inventor will be erected at the Sutherland, Frost and Haliburton Campuses this fall. The sculpture of Sir Sandford was produced by Fleming alumnus and Official Dominion Sculptor of Canada, Phil White. “Sir Sandford Fleming deserves to be honoured and remembered by Canadians – and particularly by the college that is fortunate to bear his name.  Phil White’s sculpture brilliantly captures the essence of Fleming – his vision and strength of purpose.  It is a masterful tribute to an extraordinary person," said Fleming College President Dr. Tony Tilly. White is an Art Conservation Techniques graduate from Fleming College in 1988. He now has the prestigious position of Canada’s official sculptor, to create and oversee all of the internal and external stone, woodcarving and sculptures on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.  The new sculptures are a testament to Fleming College’s history and dedication to innovation for its past and present students.Sir Sandford Fleming moved to Peterborough from Scotland when he was 18 and lived with friend, Dr. John Hutchison, from 1845 to 1849. He worked as a surveyor in the area while he became a fully qualified engineer. Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campuses in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton. Named for famous Canadian inventor and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming, the college features more than 90 full-time programs in Business and Technology, Continuing Education and Skilled Trades, Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Fine Arts, Health and Wellness, and Law, Justice and Community Services.
