Student Advisory: Student Loan Fraud
Please be cautioned that there have been reported incidences in Durham Region of a phone scam targeting students for financial and personal identification information.
According to Durham Regional Police, a male caller (from a private incoming phone number) has been calling residences claiming to be from the National Student Loan Centre, and indicates he is following-up on a student loan application. In some cases, the caller speaks with the student and requests they fax a copy of their passport and social insurance number in order to facilitate processing on their loan. The fax number is not for the National Student Loan Centre.
We caution students to be careful when providing personal information over the phone. The National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) may ask you to provide your social insurance number, copies of identification or banking information; but if you suspect the call is fraudulent, you can confirm the contact information onĀ the NSLSC website ( https://nslsc.canlearn.ca/eng/contactus.aspx ) or by calling 1 800 O-Canada (1-800-622-6232). The NSLSC will not ask for your credit card number or your username/password for your NSLSC online account.
