Students work to improve ecosystems
Trying to determine the health of Leech Lake, located east of Bracebridge, a team of third-year Fleming College Ecosystem Management students collected water, phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fish samples.
Their gathering of baseline lake health data, commissioned by the Leech Lake Stewardship Committee, will create the basis for a lake quality improvement plan.
The team’s work is just one of 11 projects that will be on display at the Frost Campus next week.
Working with external clients such as the Ontario Heritage Trust, the Victoria Stewardship Council, the City of Toronto and the City of Kawartha Lakes, students in the Ecosystem Management Technology program completed the projects as part of the Credit for Product course.
The students will present their projects and celebrate the project closing with their clients at a special event on Monday, Dec. 13, 9-11 a.m. in the Auk’s Lodge.
What is Credit for Product?
Credit for Product is a unique placement course where student teams work one day a week throughout the semester on an environmental project for an external agency. It is hands-on learning, allowing students to apply their ecosystem management skills and knowledge while gaining an understanding of what it takes to effectively manage a project.
Through this course students have opportunities to expand their network of employment contacts and gain valuable on-the-job experience.
