Sustainable Building Design and Construction Students Start New Project
Peterborough ON – May 26, 2010 – Students with Fleming’s Sustainable Building Design and Construction program have started work on their next project, a LEED Platinum certified home for the Peterborough Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. A crew of 26 students will be instructed by award winning designer, author and leader in the field of sustainable construction, Fleming College professor Chris Magwood. From April until the end of August, the class will complete the program’s first residential home in Peterborough. The house will feature prefabricated straw bale walls, radiant heating, grid tied solar panels, and a completely non-toxic interior. Each student will take responsibility for one structural, one mechanical and one administrative role within the project, and will be on site from design to completion. The Sustainable Building Design and Construction program, based out of the Haliburton Campus, is a 20-week hands-on project which introduces students into environmentally responsible and energy-efficient building practices. The final goal of each project is to produce a public building for a charity or not-for-profit group. Students come from all over the Canada to participate in this one of a kind program.Since the program’s start in 2005, students have completed projects like the 4C’s Food Bank & Thrift Store in Haliburton, Kinark Outdoor Centre’s Sustainable Living Centre and Eco Classroom, R.D. Lawrence Place for the Township of Minden Hills, the Madoc Performing Arts Centre, and The Camp Kawartha Environment Centre.
