Two new programs approved for Fleming College

Published

Fleming College’s Board of Governors yesterday approved a new Urban Forestry Technician diploma program and a Graduate Certificate program in Green Business Management.

Urban Forestry Technician: The new Urban Forestry Technician diploma program will be offered at the Frost Campus starting in September 2012. (This is in addition to the current one-year Urban Forestry certificate program.)

This new program is planned as a pathway to university degree completion with students spending two years at Fleming College and two years at the University of New Brunswick. Graduates of the Urban Forestry Technician diploma program would also receive a Bachelor of Science in Forestry with an Urban Forestry specialization upon completion of all program requirements.

With the diploma and degree combination, graduates will be eligible for a broader range of positions such as planning, implementation and management of urban forest and greenspace environments, and entry-level supervisory and management positions.

The urban forestry sector has been identified as an area of growth with a variety of employment opportunities.

Green Business Management: Green Business Management is a new graduate certificate program that will be offered at the Sutherland Campus starting in January 2012.

Arising out of the need to address environmental and sustainability issues beyond those taught in traditional business programs, the program will be offered in a condensed, module format to better accommodate those working full-time.

The program has been developed in response to the needs of current employers and those wishing to add to their knowledge profile. It will provide individuals with the skills to be able to promote and lead sustainability and green practices in business and industrial sectors.

Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campus locations in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton. Named for famous Canadian inventor and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming, the college features more than 90 full-time programs in Business and Technology, Continuing Education and Skilled Trades, Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Visual Arts, Education, Health and Wellness, and Law, Justice and Community Services. Fleming College has 6,000 full-time and 10,000 part-time students, and more than 58,000 alumni.
