Forestry workers require in-field experience with silviculture tools, as well as small and heavy equipment. In this field camp, students practice using forest inventory tools, perform tree identification and inspecting harvest compliance. Students gain experience using small, powered equipment such as water pumps for fire suppression as well as chainsaws including to complete the Workplace Safety North Introduction to Professional Chainsaw Operation Common Core Course. Students also gain experience for safe and competently use of heavy forest harvesting equipment, maintaining a safe worksite, and performing routine field maintenance and inspections.

To introduce the controls, handling and actions of forestry equipment, students gain experience on full-scale simulator operator stations. Using progressive learning modules, students learn how to operate and position forestry equipment including harvester and forwarder.

On Ontario's Crown Lands, forest workers must be trained and capable to take part in fire suppression under the Modifying Industrial Operations Protocol. Following the SP 102 Forest Firefighter Training Manual, students learn about health and safety, fire terminology and behaviour, and the basics of fire suppression.

Worker and worksite safety is critical in forestry operations. This course introduces students to key safety considerations required for Forestry Equipment Operators including legislation and personal protective measures. Students will be introduced to typical forest harvest operation site management as well as common hazards and methods to reduce risks and prevent injury.

Forest equipment operators that understand the foundations of forestry improve the success of meeting silvicultural objectives.
