Communications 1 for Health Professionals is an introductory course that provides a foundation in college-level communications relevant to professions in health. In this course, students learn to read critically, write appropriately for a variety of audiences, conduct research, cite references, revise for clarity and correctness, and present those results in various formats. In seminars, labs, and modules students will engage in both independent and collaborative activities relevant to health studies, including the development and presentation of a research assignment to help them become more effective communicators in academic and professional environments within in the field of health.

Skin care and facials are a cornerstone of the esthetics industry allowing the esthetician to support clients with their skin and wellness needs. Students will create their own ethical and professional Social Media accounts using different platforms to self promote their business model and mission statement, linking to services, products and online booking and sales. This course is an introduction to the study of Indigenous (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit) peoples in Canada. Students will explore the complex historical and contemporary relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The course will also guide students to begin to understand the diversity and depth of Indigenous societies, worldviews, and knowledge through a multi-disciplinary lens.

This course is an introduction to the study of Indigenous (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit) peoples in Canada. Students will explore the complex historical and contemporary relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The course will also guide students to begin to understand the diversity and depth of Indigenous societies, worldviews, and knowledge through a multi-disciplinary lens.

Medical Esthetics is the next level of skin care in the esthetics field where specialized facial machines and products are utilized in clinical settings. Students will learn a variety of foundational medical esthetics procedures to be demonstrated and practiced in The Spa + Clinic at Fleming. Students will be assessed on their services and professionalism, plus knowledge and skills will be shown through theoretical and practical assessments.

To continue to prepare students to work in the spa industry at a professional level, students will participate in the daily business activities of "The Spa + Clinic at Fleming". In this practicum, students will perform advanced esthetics techniques on clients and participate in the Spa Manager role of an esthetics business. Students will be assessed on their services and professionalism.

Sole-proprietorship is a common business model in the esthetics industry. Students will learn the importance of financial planning, facilities, inventory management, employment law, and insurance considerations. This course will teach the basics of day-to-day spa operations including sensible and ethical decision making. Assessments include a full business plan that can be used to apply for funds to turn your goals in to a reality.

All graduates of diploma programs require general education credits. These courses allow you to explore issues of societal concern by looking at the history, theory and contemporary applications of those issues.

Your program has designated some required general education courses. In addition, you have the opportunity to choose from a list of electives each semester.
