Introductory Welding Courses

These introductory courses will give you the basic skills to take on simple welding projects safely. Each faculty member is CWB certified in the process, which they teach. You will learn techniques hands-on in the modern welding labs of the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre of Fleming's Sutherland Campus. The Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre. The labs feature:

• AODA booth - wheelchair accessible
• Inverter type power supply with pulsing capability for GMAW
• AC/DC square wave technology GTAW machines

Process	Wire of various diameters are fed constantly to the arc through the welding gun. This process is a semi-automatic process with gas shielding. The wire can be solid, metal core or flux core. These wires offer flexibility to various applications	A consumable electrode coated in flux, producing a slag that is removed after welding. This is a manual process that can be used in various positions (Flat, Horizontal, Vertical, & Overhead)	A tungsten electrode, produces an electric arc between the torch and the material with a gas sheilding. A welder feeds the filler wire manually. Amperage control is obtained with a foot pedal or finger dial.
Speed	Fast and consistent - the wire runs through the welding gun at a pre-selected speed.	Not a production type process but very versatile in many applications	Slow, precise, requiring a steady hand, but offers high quality strong welds
Use	GMAW is great for general welding, especially high-speed production. Can be used on a variety materials, including body work to heavy fabrications depending on the selected wire.	SMAW is a great process for repair, mobile welding, and is widely used in construction, pipeline, and outdoor or remote areas for its portability.	GTAW can be used for ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Produces a very fine and precision weld. Often used in pressure welding and fabrication or repairs, and on stainless and aluminum materials.

CWB Welding Practice and Testing

The CWB requires certification renewal every two years. Fleming College is an accredited test centre for the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB). These welding courses and testing take place at the modern welding labs of the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre. The welding lab boasts:

• New advanced process equipment
• New air filtration system
• AODA booth - wheelchair accessible
• Inverter type power supply with pulsing capability for GMAW
• AC/DC square wave technology GTAW machines

These tests can be taken by graduates of Welding Certificate programs as well as welders who need to obtain or renew their certification. CWB Test sessions have been set up so you can select the option of completing either one test or two, with an hour of practice beforehand to allow the participant to practice skills in the lab before testing. A longer practice day can also be selected if more time in the lab is preferred.

Welding Introduction to SMAW (Stick)

Shielded Metal Arc Welding is one of the oldest and most common arc welding processes. This introductory level course will guide the student through the basic theory and safety aspects of the process. Hands on training will be conducted in a shop setting where common welding rods, joint types and positions will be discussed and practiced. PPE Required, Long Sleeves without cuffs, Long Pants without cuffs, Steel Toed Shoes or Boots, Safety Glasses. No Hoodies or polyester clothing allowed. Optional PPE. Welding Introduction to GMAW (Mig)

Gas Metal Arc Welding is the arc welding process used by many home hobbyists and in high production welding. This introductory level course will guide the student through the basic theory and safety aspects of the process. Hands on training will be conducted in a shop setting, common joint types and positions will be discussed and practiced. PPE Required, Long Sleeves without cuffs, Long Pants without cuffs, Steel Toed Shoes or Boots, Safety Glasses. No Hoodies or polyester clothing allowed. Optional PPE. Welding Introduction to GTAW (Tig)

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding is often used by artists and hobbyists for fabricating items with high precision as it is one the finest of the arc welding processes. This introductory level course will guide the student through the basic theory and safety aspects of the process. Hands on training will be conducted in a shop setting, common joint types and positions will be discussed and practiced. PPE Required, Long Sleeves without cuffs, Long Pants without cuffs, Steel Toed Shoes or Boots, Safety Glasses. No Hoodies or polyester clothing allowed. Optional PPE. CWB Check Test

Register for this one-hour check test to keep current all position tickets valid. All testing will be witnessed by a CWB welding inspector and will be in accordance with W47.1 and CWB welding procedures. PPE Required: Long Sleeves without cuffs, Long Pants without cuffs, Steel Toed Shoes or Boots, Safety Glasses. No Hoodies or polyester clothing allowed. CWB Practice Day

Brush up on your skills for CWB certification in the 1GF, 2GF, 3GF & 4GF positions in preparation for Fleming's CWB test date. Four CWB Practice plates will be provided for practice along with a lab technician to assist with setup and basic guidance. This practice day is not only open to current and past students, but also to those working in the industry who wish to refresh their skills in any position and prepare for re-certification and check tests. CWB - One Position Test with One Hour Practice

This one-hour practice session, combined with one position test, is to provide new and returning students with an hour to practice and prepare for and then test to certify or re-certify in one position.
