This course has been designated as an intermediate/advanced level. These courses may branch into more advanced technical skills, so a minimum of beginner level of knowledge and skill is required. Please read course descriptions as they may list some skills you need to participate in the course instruction.
Embark on a diverse exploration of surface techniques with a primary focus on cultivating an exciting vocabulary of expressive clay surfaces. This course will cover the creation and incorporation of slip, coloured slips, underglazes, ceramic chalks, ceramic transfers, stains and oxides. Through playful experimentation using techniques such as brushwork, slip trailing, stenciling, and mono printing, you will navigate a distinctive personal journey and generate a multitude of ideas to be translated into your own unique artistic language. Each new demonstrated technique will be applied to small clay test tiles and one small slab vessel. All test tiles will undergo a bisque firing with selected pieces subsequently being completed by a cone 6 glaze firing which can be collected on the last day of class. Please note this is a 6-day course with the last day reserved for discussion, clean up, and collection of all pieces from the glaze firing.
