Basketry - Traditions of Black Ash: Square to Round Workshop

Course Code: ARTS2861

This course is welcome to all levels. Anyone can take these courses if interested. Beginner-level instruction will be provided for basic skills while more advanced users can work on more complex projects with instructor assistance.
With a kit of prepared black ash splints (the growth rings of the black ash tree) you will weave a basket that includes rims and handles. You will start by forming the bottom of the basket before using weavers to bend the sides and work your way to the top of the basket, before drying and adding attachments. The black ash basket is a traditional indigenous craft of the area. The workshop will include a discussion on its history and how to harvest and prepare splints for yourself in the future.
