Weaving - Abstract Concepts to Final Artwork

Course Code: ARTS2868

This course has been designated at an intermediate level. An expectation of beginner-level knowledge is needed for these courses. Please read course descriptions carefully to determine if this course is right for you.
Explore the art of abstract weaving as a medium for storytelling and self-expression. From initial thoughts to final woven artwork, learn how to connect conceptual ideas with visual forms. Begin away from the loom with free tactile techniques such as mark making, drawing, painting, and collage to generate a personal visual language and unique compositional designs. Through materials exploration unexpected arrangements of colour, texture, geometric pattern, and expressive marks will be explored freely before committing to the restraints of the loom. Discover the techniques of inlay weaving, weft interlock, hatching, and textural processes like rya loops and fringing alongside joyous play with a wide variety of yarns and found materials. You will be individually guided to use as many or few of these techniques for your final woven artwork. Prior weaving experience necessary.
